La Tagua o “marfil vegetal” es la nuez de una palma ( Phytelephas macrocarpa Ruiz & Pav. ) que crece en la selva tropical en el noreste de Suramerica. Debido a su coloración blanquecina y a su dureza es conocida como marfil vegetal o como el mármol blanco. A finales del siglo diecinueve comenzó a ser utilizada para hacer botones y artesanías pero debido al desarrollo de materiales sintéticos, su uso fue disminuido. Hoy en día su importancia como producto natural y ecológico ha crecido.
The “Tagua”, “Corozo” or “Vegetable Ivory” is the walnut of a palm (Phytelephas macrocarpa Ruiz & Pav. ) that reaches a height of five to six meters and grows in the tropical rain forest of the northeast of South America . The Tagua walnut has a white color and is known for its toughness that has given it the name of “White Marble”. At the end of the nineteenth century it was used to make buttons and handicrafts, but was overtaken by the arrival on the market of synthetic materials. Nowadays its importance as a natural and ecological product has grown.
